I was honored with an Emmy Award for my report about government red tape hampering my attempt to investigate abuse of Pennsylvania’s welfare system.
It’s a popular refrain for candidates running for office to promise to eliminate abuse in the welfare system–but just how much is there? I set out to determine just how much abuse there was.
However, the state denied my open records request for even the most generic transactional information. Instead of giving up, I changed my approach — pulled the curtain back — and showed the viewer what was happening in my quest for information. The result was a powerful exposé about government bureaucracy.
